NetClarity to use RSS for real-time reconfiguration of countermeasures to threats
Machine-readable RSS to be used to detect internet threats, disseminate the information, and instigate countermeasures
Can one make money in RSS — an application most of us associate with news feeds and blogs? Bedford, Massachusetts-based NetClarity, a provider of network vulnerability products and services, thinks it can. The company has filed a patent application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for preemptive, proactive protection of networks using nontraditional and untapped RSS and XML sources such as the Open Vulnerability Assessment Language (OVAL), an international standard managed by MITRE and funded by DHS. The patent application, titled “Proactive Network Security using Really Simple Syndication (RSS) Feeds,” includes unique methodologies better to protect networks, quarantine untrusted network equipment and malicious insiders, and bolster the security of trusted but weak network assets against attack and downtime.
NetClarity says it will be the first company automatically to aggregate and deliver global threat and internal asset vulnerability information from MITRE, US-CERT, the SANS Institute, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), among others, to IT staff and countermeasures. This critical information would then be used dynamically to reconfigure Firewalls/VPNs, Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS), Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS), and SmartSwitches to block threats in real time.
