DHS releases $194 million in emergency management grants
States can use the money for equipment, training, and salaries; California, Texas, and New York are the big winners
State and local officials take note: DHS has finally released $194 million under the Emergency Management Performance Grant (EMPG) program. (Since the program began in 2004, it has dispersed a total of $750 million.) The funds — which are dispersed based on needs identified through the Emergency Management Accreditation Programs Process and the Nationwide Plan Review — can be used to pay for planning, equipping, training, conducting exercises, and all-hazards emergency management operations, as well as for the personnel who manage such programs. There is hardly enough space here to break down the grant allowances state by state, so instead we list the five biggest winners: California ($15,390,351); Texas ($10,096,516); New York ($9,055,930); Florida ($8,085,409); Pennsylvania ($6,347,983).
