BAA begins Heathrow trial for RFID-based baggage tracking system
BAA has begun trials of a radio frequency identification (RFID)-based baggage system at Heathrow Airport. The six-month, £150,000 trial will take place on Emirate Airline flights between London and Dubai, and will track 50,000 bags per month in an effort to reduce lost luggage. The RFID chips can be read by scanning equipment from a short distance away as the luggage passes through Heathrow’s baggage system. Passengers who give their mobile number could receive a text letting them know where their bag is when they land at the airport.
