AS&E wins $13 million NATO deal
Contract covers a range of explosives detection needs, including parcel, personnel, and cargo; no ZBVs in this deal, despite company’s oft-reported success
American Science and Engineering (AS&E), best known to our readers as the company that has sold Z Backscatter Vans (ZBV) to nearly every American law enforcement agency, has now struck a major deal with NATO. Under the terms of the $13 million contract, AS&E will deliver a comprehensive range of inspection systems, including: the OmniView Gantry cargo and vehicle inspection system; the Z Portal multi-view cargo and vehicle screening system; multiple Gemini parcel inspection systems; and multiple SmartCheck personnel screening systems. No ZBVs are involved.

OmniView Gantry System: Provides 6 MeV high-energy transmission inspection for high penetration into inspected objects. Z Backscatter X-ray technology rounds out the imaging capability
Z Portal: Designed for high-traffic locations, it can be configured with up to three Z Backscatter imaging modules to provide a left, right, and top-down view of the vehicles under examination. The system is available in two sizes — one for large trucks, buses, and cargo vehicles, and a smaller size for passenger vehicles
Gemini: Operators simultaneously view two images, a Z Backscatter image and a dual-energy image, dramatically increasing the likelihood of finding illegal materials hidden in parcels
SmartCheck: Reveals objects such as guns and knives, plastic and liquid explosives, composite weapons, and other hidden threats and contraband. Software protects the privacy of screened persons
